The Tremiti Islands, a small archipelago in the heart of the Adriatic, are a true paradise for sea lovers, but they also offer an unforgettable experience for those who wish to explore them on foot, amidst hidden trails and breathtaking views. Away from the most crowded beaches, a world of discoveries awaits those who venture along the trekking paths of San Domino, San Nicola, and Capraia islands.

San Domino: Among Aleppo Pines and Enchanting Glimpses
San Domino island, the largest and most lush of the archipelago, is a real gem for hikers. The intoxicating scent of Aleppo pines accompanies every step, while well-trodden and more hidden paths reveal corners of rare beauty.
The San Domino Panoramic Route (Levante Trail): This elliptical route, about 3 km long, is a complete immersion in the island's nature. It will lead you through lush vegetation, offering spectacular views of the sheer cliffs and crystal-clear waters. Along the way, you can admire unique rock formations like the Architiello di San Domino and discover the fascinating Bue Marino and Rondinelle Caves.
Punta del Diamante: Located at the northern tip of the island, this area is shrouded in a legend that tells of a diamond hidden among its high, jagged coasts. The path leading to Punta del Diamante offers incredible views and the feeling of being in a timeless place.
Lighthouse Trail: Starting from the small town of San Domino, this easy path leads to the island's lighthouse, an ideal panoramic point to admire the vastness of the sea and the rugged coastline.
Accessible Coves and Caves on Foot: San Domino is dotted with small coves and caves that can also be reached via paths and descents. Among these, Cala delle Arene (the only sandy beach), Cala Tramontana, Cala Matano, Cala delle Roselle, Spiaggia delle Gatte, and Spiaggia di Mezzaluna deserve a mention, each with its distinctive charm.
Capraia: The Reganico Trail and Sunset Views
Less frequented than San Domino, Capraia island offers wilder paths and an atmosphere of absolute tranquility.
Reganico Trail: A relatively easy loop path, suitable for most, starting from the town of Capraia Isola. Crossing mule tracks and dense Mediterranean scrub, the trail leads to Cala dello Zurletto, an enchanting bay reachable after passing through the Reganico Valley.
From Chiesa dell'Assunta to Punta del Dattero: A picturesque trail that winds through switchbacks and offers the chance to admire Cala di Portovecchio, the ruins of the Monte Capo Lighthouse, and Cala della Mortola. The final destination, Punta del Dattero, is renowned for offering one of the most spectacular sunsets in the archipelago.
San Nicola: History and Breathtaking Panoramas
San Nicola, the historical heart of the Tremiti, while more focused on its imposing historical structures, also offers walking paths that allow you to admire its cultural and natural heritage.
The Island's Perimeter: Walking along the perimeter of San Nicola allows you to fully appreciate the blend of history and nature. You can admire the Angevin Castle of Badiali, the Church of Santa Maria a Mare with its cloisters, and the Greco-Roman necropolis, all with the sea as a backdrop. The Levante Beach offers a unique panoramic view of the Santa Maria a Mare Monastery.
Tips for Foot Explorers:
Appropriate Footwear: Wear comfortable and sturdy trekking shoes suitable for uneven terrain and rocky paths.
Water and Sun Protection: Always carry plenty of water with you, especially on hotter days, and don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Trails may not always be shaded.
Maps and Directions: Even though the islands are small, it's always useful to have a map or a GPS application for orientation, especially on less-traveled paths.
Respect for Nature: The Tremiti Islands are a protected marine area. Stay on marked trails, do not collect plants or shells, and do not leave any waste.
Exploring the Tremiti Islands on foot is a way to connect deeply with their wild soul and their ancient history. Get ready to discover a side of the islands that will leave you breathless, one step at a time.
